Right to Bear Arms

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

By Larry Pratt / July 22, 2009
For at least two years, Panamanian gun owners had to live with the threat that the socialist government of Martin Torrijos (son of the late dictator) was going to impose a George Soros-inspired backdoor gun ban.
The Soros gun ban comes advertised as a licensing scheme which means that gun ownership is illegal unless you get special permission from the government. Getting that permission is the problem. By simply delaying processing of applications and renewals, the clock runs out and before long, nobody has a legal gun.
This kind of law can be very effective at disarming the public. I first saw a law like this on the books and in use in South Africa.
Panamanian shooters actively opposed the measure. At one point I addressed a forum they organized to dramatize the problems with the bill and the threat to safety that it presented. Happily, the Chavez-backed candidate (to succeed Torrijos) in the elections last May got her clock cleaned, and the threat of the bill ended with the socialist government... Click here to read more.
Gun rights advocates have found a sweet spot in Democratic-dominated Washington, and they are using it to aggressively push legislation.
Those Democrats, many from states in the South and Midwest, joined nearly all House Republicans to back yesterday's provision, which has passed in the Senate and could become law this week. The gun bill passed 279 to 147 in the House with the help of 105 Democratic votes; 145 Democrats opposed the bill.
The legislation was the latest defeat for gun-control advocates, who had expected more success with a Democratic president and Democratic majorities in both chambers of Congress.
Yesterday's provision, originally sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), would allow gun owners to bring the weapons into national parks and wildlife refuges as long as they are permitted by the laws of the state in which the park is located. The bill codifies a change the Bush administration had sought in its final months, but a federal judge blocked the effort in March.
WASHINGTON (AP) — In a stinging defeat for gun-control advocates, Congress has voted to allow people to carry loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges.
The House approved the measure, 279-147, on Wednesday, one day after the Senate acted.
A total of 105 Democrats in the House joined 174 Republicans in supporting the gun measure, which essentially restores a Bush administration policy that briefly allowed loaded guns in national parks earlier this year. The measure, which is included in a bill imposing new restrictions on credit card companies, allows licensed gun owners to bring firearms into national parks and wildlife refuges as long as they are allowed by state law.... More.
A new law permitting concealed loaded firearms at National Parks will not take effect until February and the Interior Department will continue to enforce Reagan-era restrictions until then, a spokeswoman said today.
"Under the current regulation, firearms are generally prohibited, but citizens may transport unloaded and dismantled or cased firearms and carry firearms while participating in approved hunting programs and under certain other circumstances," Interior spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff said in a statement released minutes after President Obama signed the credit card holders' bill of rights, which includes an amendment allowing firearms at the nation's National Parks and wildlife refuges.
The department plans to work on implementing the new law in the meantime, focusing especially on public safety and the safety of National Park employees, Barkoff said. Permission to carry a firearm into a park and the actual restrictions on such possession will vary by state, since the new federal law is governed by each state's firearms laws.
This week both the House and Senate approved Sen. Tom Coburn's amendment to the credit card bill. The Oklahoma Republican and a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has tried for years to get the measure approved, arguing that differences in state and federal firearms restrictions made it difficult for gun owners to travel between state and federal lands. Interior instituted new regulations in the waning weeks of the Bush administration, only to have them rejected by a federal judge in March. The Obama administration refused to appeal the decision and the president signed today's bill with no comment on the gun provisions. Approval of Coburn's bill is yet another of several recent setbacks for gun control advocates.
House Approves Measure to Allow Guns Into National Parks
Gun Owners of America analysis of current House Bills:
H.R. 17 (Bartlett): This bill would reaffirm the right to use firearms for self-defense and for defense of one’s home and family.
H.R. 45 (Rush): This bill would require a license for handguns and semiautomatics, including those currently possessed. The applicant must be thumbprinted and sign a certification that, effectively, the firearm will not be kept in a place where it would be available for the defense of the gun owner’s family. The applicant must also make available ALL of his psychiatric records, pass an exam, and pay a fee of up to $25. The license may be renewed after five years and may be revoked. Private sales would be outlawed, and reports to the attorney general of all transactions would be required, even when, as the bill allows, the AG determines that a state licensing system is sufficiently draconian to substitute for the federal license. With virtually no exceptions, ALL firearms transactions (involving semiautos, handguns, long guns, etc.) would be subject to a Brady check. In addition, the bill would make it unlawful in nearly all cases to keep any loaded firearm for self-defense. A variety of “crimes by omission” (such as failure to report certain things) would be created. Criminal penalties of up to ten years and almost unlimited regulatory and inspection authority would be established.
H.R. 197
(Stearns): This bill would establish national standards for concealed
carry reciprocity, but would not protect residents of pro-gun states
like
H.R. 442 (Rehberg): This bill would provide amnesty for a veteran who acquired a “souvenir” (such as a machine gun) while serving overseas, so long as it is registered during a 90-day grace period.
H.R. 495 (Rodriguez, Teague, Engel, Reyes): This bill would authorize $15,000,000 for two years to the BATFE for the purpose of enhancing its project to thwart the transportation of firearms across the Mexican border.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), the far left anti-gun group under investigation for voter fraud, could be eligible to receive millions, if not billions of dollars from the economic bailout bill that passed out of the House of Representatives yesterday.
ACORN was an aggressive supporter of Barack Obama who had served as the group’s legal counsel and even trained ACORN in “community organizing” in the presidential election. The Obama campaign even paid the group $800,000 for “voter turnout,” the very activities that came under scrutiny by the FBI....

It is named for Blair Holt. Holt, the 16-year-old son of a Chicago

It was introduced by Rep. Bobby Rush, an Illinois Democrat. According

founded Illinois' Black Panther Party. In 1969, he did six months in

If you’re not aware of what I speak let’s take a quick look. President Obama is a known anti gun rights politician that supported legislation in Illinois making it illegal to use a firearm in a self defense situation. The new Vice President Biden was the author of the 1994 “assault weapons” ban. The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi , is a well known opponent of the 2nd Amendment and voted for the “assault weapons” ban. Most of the pending cabinet appointees are anti 2nd Amendment people, as are most of the sitting Democratic House and Senate majority. They will be spurred on by the Brady Campaign..." As reported, David Garrett, 47, of the 5100 block of West Potomac Avenue, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head on the 100 block of Green Street around 2:15 am on January 1, 2009. A second person was also reportedly shot during the same incident, and is in serious to critical condition. The gunman fled after shooting the victims.
The new year was just a couple hours old, and already a Chicago resident was murdered by a criminal who ignored the decades old gun ban (as well as the many state laws that prohibit carrying a gun and shooting someone). Just as criminals ignored the handgun ban in 2008, and caused the Chicago murder rate to skyrocket, it seems that they will continue to do so in 2009. Chicago’s Mayor Daley and other anti gun activists should make a new year’s resolution to address the true causes of crime, rather than blaming guns and making it harder for Chicago’s citizens to defend themselves against violent criminals; especially when the legal system is failing to protect the victims.

The rule overturns a Reagan-era regulation that has restricted loaded guns in parks and wildlife refuges.
The previous regulations required that firearms be unloaded and placed

Freedom is a precious and rare condition of human existence. When the winds of tyranny begin to blow, it is up to the PEOPLE to either defend their rights or to acquiesce to the will of their rulers.
Despite what most politicians would have you believe, the Second Amendment of the Constitution was NOT put in place to protect the rights of deer or duck hunters!
The Founding Fathers and the American Colonialists had been under the oppression of English rule. The Second Amendment to the Bill of Rights made it clear that the people must always have the ability to defend themselves against Governmental tyranny and the criminal class.
Recently, “President-Elect” Barack Hussein Obama took time out of his busy schedule to state that he “Supports the Second Amendment” and that there was no need for people to be rushing out and buying guns in record numbers..." Click here to read more.

"President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that lawful gun owners have “nothing to fear” from his incoming administration so there is no reason for Americans to stock up on guns.
Gun shops across the country have reported increased sales amid fears that Obama intends to restrict gun sales after taking office on January 20.
While Obama supports gun control, he has repeatedly denied any intention of “taking away folks’ guns.”
"Russ Ford
might look like a longhaired, gun-control, hippie type. And in many
ways, he is. Ford and his business partners, Steve Mace and John
Knickerbocker, have patented a system that uses laser technology to
imprint coding on ammunition with the hope of making it easier for cops
to track it back to its shooter.
But Ford is not a gun-hating, anti-self-defense (as his opponents call him) activist; he has several guns that were passed down by his father, and once was an avid hunter. Unloading rounds into paper and clay pigeons at a range is still a favorite hobby. "An armed society is a polite society," Ford says, echoing rhetoric favored by Second Amendment devotees.
As
a gun lover bent on creating a system for tracking ammunition, Ford is
an anomaly in the firearm advocacy world. Says Alan Gottlieb, chairman
of the Bellevue-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear
Arms, "I'm sure every gun group in the state is opposed to it." Click here to read more.

a shell casing or two.......According
to the United States Department of Justice, there is more than a 30%
chance of never finding the killer in homicides involving a firearm1.
If ballistic evidence cannot be quickly linked to a crime gun, and the
gun recovered and quickly linked to a suspect, the chance of arresting
the perpetrator is far less likely. If the bullets and cartridge cases
used by criminals were linked directly to a potential suspect, more
crimes involving firearms would be solved and more gun crime could be
