Casperson wins Gop nomination to challenge Stupak
(August 6, 2008)
Upper Peninsula Congressman Bart Stupak has some competition coming his way. State Representative Tom Casperson of Escanaba has clinched the Republican nomination.
With all precincts reporting, Casperson had 46% of the votes in a three-way Republican primary in the 1st Congressional District.
Don Hooper, a retired trucking business owner had 28% of the votes. Attorney Linda Goldthorpe had 25%.
Casperson was tapped by party leaders to challenge Stupak, a Democrat from Menominee first elected in 1992. Stupak leads an investigative panel in the House Energy and Commerce Committee and is expected to have a wide fundraising advantage over Casperson this fall.
