Injustice in the Upper Peninsula

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Sportsmen should find Barack Obama's

stand on gun control to be reprehensible.

Obama, the Second Amendment Word
Tuesday, 30 September 2008

When a child says "I'm sorry." for misbehaving and then immediately does the same thing, he either does not know the meaning of the words he speaks or doesn't care about the value of his word.

Similarly, when a politician says he supports the Second Amendment, and then votes for bills that violate those rights, there are only two options. He either doesn't know what he is saying, or he is saying what is necessary to get elected.

Either way, actions speak louder than words.

And so it is with Barack Obama.

Before you take the shortcut to FactCheck's analysis, remember that they are funded by the Annenberg Foundation, which just happens to also fund the Brady Bunch. Also recognize that their analysis relies on Obama's words and misrepresentations of the mentioned bills.

We have been hearing for months about how Obama was a constitutional professor and respects the Second Amendment as an individual right. Sportsmen for Obama groups have sprouted up here and there to try to accent the point. A skeet shoot in Brighton, Colorado, hosted by Ray Shoenke of the AHSA, was Obama's version of the Kerry absurd.

So, do we believe the words of a candidate or do we examine readily available information? I am not suggesting anyone take the word of the AHSA or the NRA. Investigate for yourself. Obama's voting record will speak for itself.

And his voting record is consistent with his words when running as an Illinois politician instead of a federal politician.

I suggest that you do not trust this site. And do not trust Gun Law News. Link through to bills like SB-2579 (Illinois 2003) and read the kind of bills that Obama actually voted for and read his speech on the bill  (page 123). Then examine the kind of bills that Obama voted against: S-397.

Do those votes reflect a position of support for the Second Amendment?

Do Obama's words mirror his actions or give the reflection of someone hoping you will not research his actions?

Do not let Barack fool you. Despite his words, Obama will support all the gun control he feels he can get passed. And he will do it while saying that he is not infringing the rights of hunters.

Now, if you disagree with me, please shoot me a note and provide me with information on actual actions that Obama has taken to support our Second Amendment rights. Words do not count. I commit to publish those Obama's actions.

Parsing Obama
Monday, 22 September 2008

It is reasonably well known that Obama tends to do less than well when he runs off script. For this reason, he tends to travel with his teleprompter. His words are carefully chosen meaning that what he does not say can be as or more important than what he does say. And that is why we must look carefully at his words.

So, what does Obama say on the Second Amendment?

His website ( Supporting the Rights and Traditions of Sportsmen ) used to say:

Respect the Second Amendment: Millions of hunters own and use guns each year. Millions more participate in a variety of shooting sports such as sporting clays, skeet, target and trap shooting that may not necessarily involve hunting. As a former constitutional law professor, Barack Obama believes the Second Amendment creates an individual right and he greatly respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, transport and use guns for the purposes of hunting and target shooting. He also believes that the right is subject to reasonable and commonsense regulation.

Refining his statement, the same Fact Sheet has now been editted down to:

Respect the Second Amendment: Millions of hunters and shooters own and use guns each year. Barack Obama believes the Second Amendment creates and individual right, and he respects the constitutional rights of Americans to bear arms. He will protect the rights of hunters and other law-abiding Americans to purchase, own, trasport, and use guns.

First and foremost, the Constitution does not create any rights. It ACKNOWLEDGES rights that predate the writing of the Constitution. It is amazing that a ten year professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago does not get this.

At any rate, for all this belief in people's individual rights in the Second Amendment, that did not prevent Barack from believing that D.C.'s complete ban on handguns post May 1976 was constitutional ( The Chicago Tribune, November 20, 2007, "Court To Hear Gun Case" ).

And remember Obama sliding offscript:

Wall Street Journal, September 5, 2008

“Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said.

It would seem that Barack has given thought to taking them all away. That is consistent with his 1996 questionaire where he advocated the banning of all handguns. ( Obama has attempted unsucessfully to distance himself from this questionaire. )

Obama has been trying to forget about this issue by repeatedly saying that he is not going to take our guns away. Never does he say that we will be able to continue to acquire them or that our children will be able to buy firearms.

Barack has also been very open about his advocacy of a new assault weapons ban. The most popular rifle in the country would become illegal to acquire under Barack's leadership.

One must ask Barack where he thinks the Constitution draws the line with "shall not be infringed".

If Barack really believed in the whole Constitution, our Second Amendment rights would be addressed under the "Civil Rights" tab on his site instead of under "Sportsmen" which sits under "Additional Issues".  Gun rights are apparently the ugly step child that Barack does not what to bring up.

Obama Goes Offscript
Sunday, 07 September 2008

From the Wall Street Journal:

Obama: ‘I’m Not Going to Take Your Guns Away’
Christopher Cooper reports from Duryea, Pa., on the presidential race.
The Obama campaign talks a lot about new ideas and expanding the political map, but in the swing state of Pennsylvania, which the campaign has focused on almost exclusively since the Democratic convention, old-school issues still rise to the fore.
The latest example came Friday during a small political event at SCHOTT North America Inc., a glass factory in Duryea, Pa., where even a hand-picked crowd threw Barack Obama a curve ball.
A woman in the crowd told Obama she had “heard a rumor” that he might be planning some sort of gun ban upon being elected president. Obama trotted out his standard policy stance, that he had a deep respect for the “traditions of gun ownership” but favored measures in big cities to keep guns out of the hands of “gang bangers and drug dealers’’ in big cities “who already have them and are shooting people.”
“If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.
So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’

I guess that he would take them away if he could get the votes.....Yup, and he thinks the Second Amendment is an individual right. Right.

Yea, right.

He will be able to fool a few for awhile. But most of us are not that stupid.

His actions speak louder than words.

Obama's Acceptance Speach
Friday, 29 August 2008

From Senator Obama's acceptance speach:

The — the reality of gun ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don’t tell me we can’t uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of criminals.

Would somebody please inform the senator that it has been a felony for criminals to be in possession of ANY firearm since before the uninformed senator was born? The first criminal in possess law that I have found is the Federal Firearms Act of 1938.

And I suspect, a criminal in possession in rural Ohio would be no less a danger than one in Cleveland.

Joe, In His Own Words
Sunday, 24 August 2008

From the Democratic debates, examine what Joe Biden thinks of gun owners:

My guns are not my babies; I don't cherish them.

But I do cherish the freedom they represent. They are physical manifestations of the power of the citizenry recognized by the founding fathers.

What a guy. By choosing Biden, Obama once again highlights his respect for the Second Amendment, as a constitutional scholar. Right.
